Evil Dead Meets Cast Away
Sam Raimi is a god amongst horror fans. From The Evil Dead to Drag Me to Hell, he knows how to scare us. But for the last 15 years, he has played in the big-budget sandbox (Oz the Great and Powerful, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), keeping things mostly family-friendly.
That streak ends now.
R is for Raimi
His new film, Send Help, has been rated R for "pervasive language and some terror/violence." This marks his first R-rated film since 2009.
The plot is delicious: Rachel McAdams plays an employee stranded on a deserted island with her toxic, abusive boss, played by Dylan O'Brien. "It's Misery on an island," Raimi teased. "Only with more crabs."
The Psychological Horror
While Raimi is known for splatstick gore, this film appears to be a psychological thriller. The horror comes from the power dynamic. Who survives? The boss who is used to giving orders, or the employee who is used to surviving them?
With McAdams (who screams beautifully, as seen in Red Eye) and O'Brien (who has pivoted to darker roles recently), the acting will anchor the scares.
Welcome back, Sam. We missed the blood.
Send Help washes ashore this summer.
