A 15-year-old white teen recently pleaded guilty to trying to drown a black teen while shouting racist slurs during an attack last year. In 2023, abuser John Sheeran met his victim at a pond in Chatham, Massachusetts. The victim, who reportedly wore a life vest because she couldn't swim, quickly became the target of verbal abuse and physical attacks. Sheeran reportedly threw rocks at the teenager and forced him into the water. Once there, Sheeran swam to the boy, dunked his head underwater multiple times and repeatedly called the child a “nigger.” In addition to racial slurs, Sheeran's associates mocked the drowned teen and called him “George Floyd.” Additionally, a witness said the boy begged Sheeran not to splash him with water or push him because he couldn't swim. Witnesses explained seeing Sheeran and his accomplice force the teen underwater while he screamed for help. When the two teenagers were approached, they were reportedly giggling and showed no remorse for their actions. Still, Sheeran pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. His guilty plea carries the possibility of an adult sentence, but the court is still considering how to charge him. Meanwhile, Sheeran's associates are currently facing harassment charges and will be tried as juveniles.
