Turn unwanted Cheesecake Factory and Walmart gift cards into travel miles with United's MileagePlus program

If you have an unused gift card, it might just be your ticket to travel. United Airlines has launched a gift card redemption program as part of its MileagePlus loyalty program, allowing members to convert gift card balances into miles. This means that gift card you forgot about or didn't need can now help you book your next vacation. For every $25 in gift cards purchased, you'll earn 670 MileagePlus miles. That's 1,330 miles on a $50 card and 2,660 miles on a $100 card. To use the program, MileagePlus members simply log into the Trade Gift Cards section of the United website, select a retailer and enter their gift card balance. After submitting your details, the program will calculate the total miles you will earn and upon accepting the offer, the miles will be credited to your account. There’s no limit to the number of gift cards you can redeem, and you don’t need to mail physical cards—everything is done electronically. While miles are typically credited immediately, United advises that some transactions may take up to five business days to be processed. For example, a one-way United flight from New York (EWR) to Orlando (MCO) costs just 9,100 MileagePlus miles, which means a $350 gift card can help you book your flight directly. The program is available for gift cards from a variety of major retailers, including Target, Walmart, Starbucks, Best Buy, Home Depot, Nordstrom, Pottery Barn, Urban Outfitters and Cheesecake Factory. Even gift cards from competing airlines like American Airlines and Southwest can be redeemed for United miles. United said the move is part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen its MileagePlus program. The gift card redemption program is integrated with other loyalty benefits, such as Delta’s SkyMiles experience, which offers members the opportunity to redeem miles for VIP access to concerts, sporting events and more.
