It's been a few months since popular Houston restaurant Turkey Leg Hut officially closed its doors. Since closing, founder Nakia Holmes has come out to explain how the restaurant came to be and what ultimately led to its demise. In a recent interview with Essence , Holmes opened up about her relationship with her now ex-husband, Lyndell Price. Their love story starts out as just friends but eventually turns into a romantic relationship and leads to marriage. Together, Holmes and Price founded the Turkey Leg Shack, which soon became a very successful business. Despite its growing popularity, the restaurant had problems behind the scenes. Just months after the restaurant opened, Price was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for his role in the IRS fraud scheme. “The reason he's in jail is because of something that happened before I even knew him,” Holmes said. “It hit me like a ton of bricks.” Things got worse when Price returned. Holmes said they often clashed over different management styles and Price's increasing control, especially over finances. To make matters worse, the restaurant sparked controversy after implementing a new strict dress code in 2021, enforced by Price. The policy was intended to create a more family-friendly environment, but many viewed the changes as discriminatory, especially against black customers. We have different management styles,” Holmes continued. “It was all his idea. But, beyond that, the couple still faces challenges with financial issues. In 2022, American Foods sued the restaurant for $120 Thousands of dollars in outstanding debt, which Holmes said was the result of poor internal accounting and heated conversations between Price and supplier representatives, but the damage was done the following year. The restaurant was hit by bankruptcies, health code violations, and massive debt, which later led to Turkey Leg Shack closing its doors for good. Still, Holmes chose to stay focused on rebuilding her life and career as she continues to reflect on her personal life and her business. Lessons learned. “I’m focused on the future,” Holmes added. “I focus my energy on loving those who love me. ” Like this: Like Loading… Discover more from Baller Alert Subscribe to have the latest posts delivered to your email.
