Trump administration orders HUD to cut 50% of its workforce against civil rights and disaster recovery offices

The Trump administration directed the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to eliminate 50% of the workforce, a move that could seriously affect fair housing enforcement, housing market research and disaster recovery efforts. The Council 222, confirmed the plans of Bloomberg Law and noted that layoffs would primarily affect the HUD office responsible for enforcing civil rights laws, analyzing housing market data and funding disaster relief efforts. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA), which provides mortgage insurance, will be exempt from layoffs. The labor reduction follows the February 11 directive, which ordered federal agencies to eliminate the role of “executing functions that are not regulated.” The Directive specifically calls for the Elimination of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Programs, many of which operate within the HUD's Civil Rights Office. With HUD hiring about 9,600 people, layoffs could eliminate nearly 4,800 jobs. The agency has not issued an official statement on the cuts.
