In the late night move, the Trump administration announced that smartphones, laptops and major electronic components would be exempt from severe tariffs on foreign goods. The decision, issued by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, omitting nearly twenty technology-related items from the steep import duties that just came into effect, such as chips, flash drives and TV screens. China refuted by raising the responsibility for all U.S. imports to 125%, escalating an already tense trade standoff. The tariff disruption has provided major relief to tech companies such as Apple, which could face hundreds of dollars in additional import taxes brought to the United States from China. During the exemption, apples either avoid consumption costs or pass it on to customers at a higher price.
