TikTok calls viral report of possible Elon Musk acquisition 'pure fiction'

The internet had mixed reactions to reports Monday night that Elon Musk might acquire TikTok. While some Twitter (X) users are eagerly anticipating the merger, others are concerned about the chaos that will ensue. Despite widespread media reports, TikTok quickly denied any talks with Musk, calling the reports “pure fiction.” The statement came in response to a Bloomberg report that Chinese officials were considering Musk's social media platform taking over TikTok's U.S. operations. The report speculates that such a move could happen if the U.S. Supreme Court upholds a ban on the app. A ruling on the matter is expected on January 19, after which TikTok could be forced to sell or face a potential U.S. ban. A spokesperson for TikTok told BBC News: “We cannot be expected to comment on matters that are pure fiction.” The company has maintained its refusal to sell its US operations. Amid the uncertainty, Musk's ally, former President Donald Trump, pushed the Supreme Court to delay the ruling, arguing for a “political solution” when he is expected to return to office. Trump further fueled speculation last month when he met with TikTok CEO Shouzi Zhou at Mar-a-Lago. As the deadline approaches, Democratic lawmakers are urging the Biden administration to extend it. During the Supreme Court hearing, the justices discussed national security concerns, with the Biden administration warning of possible Chinese influence through TikTok. TikTok, however, denies any such relationship, arguing that banning the app would infringe on free speech.
