As the death toll from California wildfires rises to 16, new heartbreaking information about the victims has emerged. Many people lost their lives while trying to protect their homes or care for their loved ones, demonstrating tremendous courage and love in the face of great danger. Anthony Mitchell recalled his 67-year-old great-grandfather as a “protector” who would do anything for the family. Anthony Mitchell Sr., in a wheelchair after his leg was amputated, with his son Justin, who has cerebral palsy and cannot walk. The two were spotted together. “He's not leaving my brother,” Anthony told NBC News. “My dad loved his family … we were his babies.” Likewise, 83-year-old Erliene Louise Kelley refused to evacuate her Altadena home of more than four decades, despite warnings. “She was peaceful in the home she cared for every day,” her granddaughter Briana Navarro said, recalling Kelly’s active lifestyle and cherished neighborhood relationships. Victor Shaw, 66, died while trying to save his family's home. His sister Sally described their frantic final moments as “like a storm” amid flying embers. Shaw, who was found clutching a garden hose, remained committed to preserving the home his parents built even in death. Rodney Kent Nickerson, 83, insisted he would be OK despite family pleas for him to leave. After the fire, his daughter found him lying on his bed intact. “This is where we've been our whole lives,” she said, feeling overwhelmed by the loss. Rory Sykes, 32, a former child actor who was born blind and had cerebral palsy, died in Malibu after his mother, Shelley, could not be rescued. “Through surgery and therapy, he overcame many difficulties, regained his sight and was able to learn to walk. Despite the pain, he remained passionate about traveling the world with me, from Africa to Antarctica,” she wrote in a lengthy tribute to her son road.
