Suspect is charged with murder and terrorism after arson in Pennsylvania governor's mansion

A man was detained after a fire in the early morning of the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion, which state police said caused “tremendous damage.” According to Dauphin County Da Francis Chardo.gov, the suspect will be identified as Cody Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, and will face charges including attempted murder, terrorism, attempted arson and aggravated assault. Josh Shapiro, his wife, four children, two dogs and guests celebrating Passover, safely evacuated around 2 a.m. “Thank God, no one was injured and the fire was put out.” Authorities said Balmer violated the safety fence and entered the residence using a homemade combustion device. “The investigation is continuing,” said state police Colonel Christopher Paris. Deputy Commissioner George Bivens confirmed that Balmer had initially evaded detection. Visible fire damage includes destroyed glass panes and burnt doors on the south side of the mansion. Investigators removed part of the fence wrapped in black plastic to obtain evidence. “This mean timid behavior should unite the Pennsylvanians to support the Shapiro family,” Mark Schweiker said. Tom Ridge called the attack “shocking” and said those responsible “must have an account.” Pennsylvania police gave a $10,000 reward for information resulting in the conviction.
