Members of Congress are experiencing a horrific surge in fake bomb threats that show no signs of slowing down. These threats, often in the form of “beating” incidents, are directed at lawmakers across the country, putting their lives, families and communities at risk. The latest case involves the death of a Georgia woman who died in a crash when her vehicle collided with a police officer responding to a fake bomb threat at the home of Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. This follows alarming threats against members of both parties. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger testified in December that more than 50 assaults on members of Congress had occurred in just one month. These dangerous scams often involve false reports of a bomb or mass shooting at a lawmaker's home, prompting a SWAT team response. Mager warned that these high-risk conflicts could result in injury or death to innocent people, noting that multiple cases of assault occur every day. Lawmakers from both parties have reported an increase in such attacks. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace received death threats, while Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz was informed of a possible plot against his life. California Rep. Wiley Nickel, who received death threats after publishing a political editorial, described the environment for lawmakers and their families as “very ugly.” In response, Capitol Police are beefing up security, deploying more officers and helping lawmakers become more aware of their personal safety.
