The tragic and extremely disturbing case of Nazia Harris captured the attention of social media, sparking backlash and calls for justice. If you're unfamiliar with the case, the 13-year-old went missing on January 9, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan. The little girl was seen getting off the school bus and has not been seen since. Sadly, the full picture of what happened to Harris only became clear in September 2024 after her aunt's boyfriend, Jarvis Butts, was arrested in connection with the disappearance and suspected death. A preliminary hearing began on January 6 and it quickly emerged that Butts had been defrauding Harris since at least 2022. Text messages between the two revealed that Butts had been sexually abusing Harris and meeting children behind the family's back. Hundreds of text messages documented the unspeakable behavior and the extent of the abuse he carried out. Even more troubling, Harris' aunt, Shannon Harris, the mother of Butts' four children, claims she never suspected anything unusual. Harris has custody of her grandmother, who also seemed to ignore some key signs. One of Harris' cousins testified that they witnessed Butts sexually assaulting Harris and accused him of making advances toward her, though she escaped his coercion. When Harris revealed to Butts that she was pregnant, authorities testified that he searched online for abortion and even antifreeze to get rid of the pregnancy. A judge ruled that his case will proceed to a jury trial, but the question of where Harris' body is remains unresolved. Despite this, the clothes she was wearing on the day of her disappearance were found. He was also found in possession of Harris' glasses. As of now, Butts refuses to admit where he placed her or how she was murdered. Investigators found he had a history of forming romantic relationships with women to gain access to their children and was accused of sexually abusing several other children, including a four-year-old. The high-profile case caught the attention of rapper Skilla Baby, who offered to pay for Nazia Harris' memorial service. Her relatives have yet to respond to his overtures, although a judge told a preliminary hearing that they had failed the vulnerable child.
