According to the March 2023 Sagittarius who killed six people at Covenant School in Nashville was driven by a desire for notoriousness, no revenge or resentment towards the school. The newly released 48-page report concluded that Hale’s motivation was rooted in the public narrative of a desire to be remembered and controlled for the shooting. “Hale is eager to remember her name and behavior long after her death,” the investigators wrote. “She wants absolute control over the narrative surrounding the attack, especially the narrative of her motivations.” The report notes that Hale has no personal grudge against Covenant School, students or staff. Instead, she spent years studying mass shootings, especially the 1999 Columbine High School attack, which she believed was her main inspiration. Hale reportedly believes Columbine shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold are “worthy of simulation” and he believes their post-death infamous makes them “gods.” She reportedly kept a detailed journal and “The Storm of Anger”, which she expressed growing anger and isolation over the years. Police found that since 2018, her writing has been increasingly consumed by violent and alienated topics. On the day of the shooting, Hale left his home at 8 a.m. with guns, ammunition and tactical equipment. She sat in the car for a few minutes before she arrived at school at 9:53 a.m. before sending a goodbye message to her friend. At 10:10 a.m., Hale fired her attack using an arch pistol. Custodian Mike Hill was shot dead at 10:11 a.m., followed by students Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney and Hallie Scruggs, as well as endorsement teacher Cynthia Peak. Principal Katherine Koonce was shot dead at 10:13 a.m. after leaving the office to respond to a fire alarm triggered by the gunfire. The first officer arrived at 10:19 a.m. and placed Hale on the second floor, and reportedly she was shot dead at 10:24 am, and she was confused and frustrated after encountering a locked classroom door as students and staff followed an aggressive shooting procedure and hid behind a roadblock. Investigators noted that despite months of preparation, Hale seemed unaware of how modern school safety programs limit her chances for potential victims. Police also found that Hale formed an emotional attachment to a group of stuffed animals, which she saw as her close companion. After the attack, police found toys in the car, and digital files show Hale created stories and cartoons involving animals, projecting her emotions onto them.
