One of the few black movie theaters in America suddenly closes

One of the only black movie theaters in the country was forced to close its doors. On December 30, the NextAct Cinema in Pikesville, Baltimore County, announced its sudden closure. Founded by Anthony Fykes and Robert Wright, this independent theater has been serving the community for seven years, providing a unique, family-like movie experience. We don’t want to be a movie bistro,” Fykes explained earlier in 2024. “The idea behind NextAct Cinema is that you come to a theater that feels like home. ” The venue is located in the historic Pikes Theater and features two 43-seat rooms where patrons can enjoy blockbusters, independent films and classic films, all with the option to order snacks, meals or wine directly at their seat.
