After the education sector cut half of its workforce, we now know how many people have lost their jobs in the massive layoffs on Tuesday. The department abandoned 1,315 workers, cutting the agency's workforce by nearly half within two months of Donald Trump's second term. In addition, 572 employees accepted the separation package, leaving 63 probation workers released last month. Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican of Louisiana, assured that layoffs would not affect the department’s ability to fulfill its statutory obligations. However, union leaders strongly opposed the move. President Sheria Smith, of the United Government Employees’ Federation local 252, condemned the administration, saying “there are disrespectful to thousands of workers who are committed to serving fellow countrymen.” Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, warned: “The real victim will be our most vulnerable students.” The Office of Civil Rights faces particularly deep cuts that seriously underfloat the regional centers of New York, San Francisco and Boston. Amid growing concerns, McMahon confirmed that Trump plans to sign an executive order to remove the department, despite legal challenges. “We won't stand by.” As Trump moves forward, the future of federal education oversight remains uncertain.
