Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum Pardo immediately responded to President-elect Donald Trump's recent suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of the Americas.” At Wednesday's press conference, Sheinbaum stood in front of a historical map from 1607 that labeled much of North America as “Mexican America.” Sheinbaum pointed at the map and smiled and said, “Why don't we call it Mexican America?” Sounds pretty, doesn't it? Her sharp remarks were a lighthearted but firm rebuke of Trump's provocative proposals. “We're going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” Trump said at a recent event. That’s a lot of territory covered. He failed to acknowledge that the Gulf of Mexico has retained that name since before the founding of the United States. Sheinbaum also responded to Trump's comments that Mexico is “basically run by cartels,” firmly responding, “With all due respect, , in Mexico, the people rule. She stressed that her administration will continue to defend Mexico's sovereignty as a “free, independent and sovereign nation.” The Mexican president also called attention to the issue of U.S. gun smuggling into Mexico, noting that 75% of guns seized in the country are Trafficked from the U.S. “We are very interested in stopping U.S. guns from entering Mexico,” she said. Trump's comments about Mexico, including his claim that the country must stop “allowing millions of people to pour into our country,” have reignited tensions between the two countries. He has made inflammatory remarks about Mexico Sheinbaum, however, maintained a cautious tone, saying she wanted to maintain a “good relationship” with Trump despite his provocative comments. The exchange mirrored past disputes between Trump and the Mexican leader. In 2016, former Mexican President Vicente Fox famously responded to Trump’s insistence that Mexico pay for a border wall, saying: “I’m not going to pay for that (expletive) wall cost. He should pay for it. He has money. ” Like this: Like Loading… Discover more from Baller Alert Subscribe to get the latest posts delivered to your email.
