Mark Zuckerberg's SGD policy allows LGBTQ+ identities to be labeled as mentally ill

Meta recently updated its content moderation policy to allow users to label gay and transgender identities as “mental illnesses.” The shift allows for certain characteristics that were previously prohibited, including language targeting protected characteristics such as sexual orientation and gender identity. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg defended the move, saying it needed to “simplify content policy” and support “free expression” on Facebook and Instagram. The decision includes abandoning third-party fact-checking and relaxing standards for content removal. “With callback filters, we will reduce censorship and accidental deletions,” Zuckerberg explained. Despite this framework, a backlash erupted among Meta's employees. Employees expressed shock and embarrassment, with some LGBTQ+ employees feeling particularly unsupported, 404 Media reported. One employee said there was “chaos inside,” while another highlighted the emotional toll, noting that some were considering leaving the company. One employee posted on an internal platform, “I am LGBT and mentally ill…I take time out to take care of my mental health.” The policy change sparked a heated debate about balancing free speech and platform security. Zuckerberg acknowledged that “this trade-off reduces bad things from happening,” but argued that it was more in line with mainstream discourse.
