Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has formally introduced legislation in Congress to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America, in line with a controversial proposal from President-elect Donald Trump. The congresswoman announced Tuesday that her office is working to advance the measure and develop a framework, a step toward reaffirming U.S. sovereignty over the waters. In a statement released by her office, Greene explained her motivations for introducing the bill: “Mexican cartels currently use the Gulf of Mexico to traffic people, drugs, weapons and God knows what else the Mexican government allows them to do. The American people We are paying to protect and secure the sea lanes where commerce takes place. Our U.S. armed forces protect this area from any foreign military threat. This is our Gulf, and the world should call it that.” The two-page bill specifically discusses the renaming of the Bay Area. It directs the Commerce Secretary to implement name changes to federal maps, documents and regulations within 180 days of adoption. However, the bill does not include provisions dealing with border security, drug trafficking or maritime trade — issues Greene highlighted in her statement. The bill does not force the international community to adopt the name change, meaning countries like Mexico and other Gulf Coast states are not obligated to call the body of water the Gulf of the Americas. President-elect Trump has made other high-profile proposals in recent weeks, including annexing Canada and Greenland to the United States and taking back ownership of the Panama Canal. While the ideas have stoked international skepticism, Greene's bill reflects a broader push to align Congress with Trump's vision for redefining American influence.
