A Los Angeles man won a $50 million verdict in a lawsuit against Starbucks after he was permanently burned in a tea spilled in a driving car in 2020. The incident was captured in security footage showing Garcia's immediate reaction upon receiving a plate of drinks. Within 1.4 seconds of the receiving tray, the cup tilts and sprinkles the hot liquid onto Garcia. His injuries include severe burns, nerve damage and permanent damage to the genitals. He underwent multiple surgeries and continued to endure pain and PTSD. Garcia's attorney, Nicholas Rowley, criticalized Starbucks' refusal to take responsibility for the incident, stating, “If I hand you a drink that's not secured, and it falls right on you… then you're responsible and I'm not.”The jury deliberated for just 40 minutes before siding with Garcia, affording that Starbucks' actions were grossly negligent. “This injury changed Michael's life — it was gross negligence,” Rowley said. Starbucks disagreed with the ruling and vowed to appeal. The company had previously offered Garcia $3 million and later increased the offer to $30 million, but he refused the offer unless Starbucks apologized and revised its policy.
