
Kerry Washington is ready for the future that black achievement is so commonplace that it no longer needs to celebrate “first”. While introducing the NAACP Image Awards red carpet to ballerinas, Washington was asked about the last hurdle she hopes blacks can overcome. Her answer? You need to constantly acknowledge your “first” in doing something. “I'd like us to stop having to acknowledge firsts, cuz we've just been in all the rooms and done all the things,” Washington said.The Emmy-winning act has long been an advocate for diversity and representation in Hollywood, breaking barriers herself with her historical role as Olivia Pope on Scandal—a performance that made her the first Black woman to lead a primetime network drama in nearly 40 years.Washington also shared her excitement for her upcoming film Shadow Force, a black action romance starring herself and Omar Sy (Lupine). The film, to be released on May 2, brings action, drama and love together, and she says “dreams come true.”
