While the proposal sounds attractive, the numbers behind it raise serious financial problems. Putting Musk's idea from the perspective, let's break down the mathematics: the estimated U.S. population in 2024 is about 335 million. The total of $5,000 for each person is $1.675 trillion. The amount is nearly 40% of the total federal budget ($4.9 trillion in 2024). It also represents 6% ($28 trillion) of U.S. GDP. This means the government will need to find nearly $1.7 trillion in savings to fund the program, which is larger than the annual budget for Social Security ($1.4 trillion). Musk's.
