
In one of his final acts as president, Joe Biden recently awarded the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to more than a dozen people, including Denzel Washington and Magic Johnson. Video The heartfelt and unforgettable ceremony took place in the East Room of the White House House and featured a distinguished guest list that included politicians and other prominent public figures including the Kennedy family. The late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was honored at the event, with his daughter Kerry accepting the award on behalf of her father and Kennedy. Honorees also include other individuals creating change in their respective industries. In addition to Washington and Johnson, retired NBA icon and civil rights icon Fannie Lou Hamer (posthumously), former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U2 frontman Bono and Science Educator Bill Nye also received the award. Separately, President Biden took some time on Friday to highlight the heroism of seven U.S. Army soldiers who were awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor. Six of the awards are posthumous and honor service members who made significant advances in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. “They are true heroes… they all go above and beyond the call of duty,” Biden said of these service members.
