Schedules can be hectic in Hollywood and politics, but for Sheryl Lee Ralph and her husband, Senator Vincent Hughes, their unconventional living arrangement makes their marriage more than Stronger than ever. The two married in 2005 and made a bold decision early on: they would not give up their lives or careers for the same city. “You fall in love with someone and then you realize they're not going to give up their career,” Ralph explained to PEOPLE. “Vincent isn't leaving Philadelphia, and I'm not leaving Hollywood. So, we do it our own way.” For nearly 20 years, Ralph and Hughes have embraced life as a long-distance couple, meeting every two weeks to Reconnect. “When I went to see him, I was happy to see him. When it came time to leave, it was, 'Bye.' See you soon,” said Ralph. “It works because we both respect each other's space and independence.” The Emmy-winning Abbott Elementary star said the setup allowed their love to flourish and neither of them felt the need to sacrifice themselves personality. “He has his life and I have mine. He has his light and I have my light,” Ralph shared. “Mutual respect is everything.” Their success as a couple also comes from tackling problems head-on. After divorcing her first husband, Ralph made open communication a priority in her second marriage. “I've learned to talk about things before they become big problems. Sitting in silence will only make you anxious and take the joy out of life,” she said. As their 20th wedding anniversary approaches in July, Ralph reflects on how their unique arrangement has stood the test of time. “Some people can't even get through two years together,” she quipped. “But for us, being separated after marriage has been a blessing. It has allowed us to grow as individuals and as a couple.” Like this: Like Loading… Discover more from Baller Alert Subscribe to get the latest posts sent to your email.
