British man arrested in Miami Beach for illegally voting in six elections

Authorities on Friday announced the arrest of James Ross Wightman, a 65-year-old British citizen living illegally in the United States, as he voted in six elections in South Florida. Whiteman, who was deported from the United States more than three decades ago, was arrested in Miami Beach and faces six counts of illegal voting. Whiteman has since been registered to vote in Miami-Dade County, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). In November 2000, he used an apartment on Pennsylvania Avenue in South Beach as his registered address. Although not a citizen, records show Whiteman lied about being a U.S. citizen and ran in local and national elections in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Whiteman was originally deported in 1989 after a drug-related arrest in Hawaii. Authorities said he returned to the U.S. illegally and used forged documents to live and operate in the United States. In November 2013, Whiteman allegedly presented a forged Ohio birth certificate to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to renew his driver's license. The Florida Department of Highway Safety, in partnership with federal agencies and the Miami-Dade County Elections Office Supervisor, conducted an investigation and discovered that Whiteman not only illegally re-entered the country, but also voted multiple times while posing as a U.S. citizen.
