Black families displaced by California wildfires launch fundraising campaign to rebuild lives

As wildfires in and around Los Angeles continue to devastate residents, the Black community is coming together to undo the damage during this difficult time. For many of these families, social media has been a lifeline, allowing these people to share their stories with the world and seek immediate assistance. Since Tuesday, the Palisades and Eaton fires have destroyed thousands of homes and buildings and claimed some lives. The Eaton Fire alone, fueled by Santa Ana winds, wreaked havoc in areas such as Pasadena, Altadena and the Los Angeles National Forest. More specifically, Altadena has been severely impacted by wildfires and is a prime location in need of assistance due to its rich Black cultural history. To give you a quick lesson, Altadena was known as a safe haven for African Americans during the Great Migration. At the time, black families had limited access to housing, but despite the challenges, the community thrived. Today, 70% of Altadena residents are homeowners, many of whom are passed down from generation to generation. That being said, these homes are not just a place to live, but family heirlooms that may now be lost forever. As a result, many people have launched relief efforts through various channels, including GoFundMe. In fact, the fundraising platform has created a center dedicated to Los Angeles wildfire relief. But in addition to their efforts, organizers have teamed up to compile a list of verified GoFundMe accounts belonging to Black families in need of assistance. While the road to recovery will be long and challenging for most, ongoing support not only helps families rebuild their lives, but also helps preserve the rich heritage of these Black communities and legacies that were cemented years ago.
