The Ghost of Sparta Found
The speculation is over. Prime Video's highly anticipated adaptation of God of War has cast its lead. Ryan Hurst, best known as Opie in Sons of Anarchy and Beta in The Walking Dead, will play Kratos.
Why Hurst?
Hurst is a massive physical presence, standing at 6'4". But more importantly, he has the emotional range. Kratos in the Norse saga isn't just a rage monster; he's a tired, grieving father trying to protect his son. Hurst's performance as Opie showed he can play the "gentle giant with a violent past" perfectly.
He also has experience with the franchise, having voiced Thor in the game God of War: Ragnarök. This meta-casting is a fun nod to the fans, even though he's switching roles (and pantheons).
The Challenge
Christopher Judge's voice performance in the games is iconic. Hurst has big boots (and sandals) to fill. He will need to capture that deep, rumbling stoicism without it feeling like an impression.
Production Status
With the lead cast, production is expected to begin in Iceland later this year. The show will adapt the 2018 game, focusing on the journey of Kratos and Atreus to the highest peak in the realms.
Grab your axe, boy. It's happening.
