The Dothraki Feud: Linguist Fires Back at Emilia Clarke's 'Game of Thrones' Claims

Daenerys Targaryen

Dracarys in Real Life?

It seems the drama isn't limited to Westeros. Emilia Clarke, beloved for her role as Daenerys Targaryen, recently appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and expressed frustration with David J. Peterson, the linguist who created the Dothraki and High Valyrian languages.

Clarke claimed she was "hurt" after hearing Peterson said she "sucked" at speaking the fictional languages compared to her co-stars.

The Linguist's Defense

Peterson has now responded, and he is bringing receipts. Taking to social media (and his own blog), he clarified that his comments were taken out of context.

"I never said Emilia sucked," Peterson stated. "I said the character's grasp of Dothraki in the early seasons was written to be halting because she was learning it. Emilia mastered exactly what was on the page. She is one of the best students I've ever had."

The "Male Co-Stars" Angle

Clarke had mentioned that the male actors were praised more, despite having less dialogue. Peterson refuted this too, noting that Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm) was indeed a prodigy at Valyrian, but that didn't diminish Clarke's massive workload of delivering speeches to thousands of CGI extras.

A Storm in a Teacup?

This feels like a classic case of Hollywood telephone. Clarke likely heard a summarized version of an old interview. Hopefully, the Mother of Dragons and the Father of Dothraki can reconcile over a cup of Starbucks (left in the shot or otherwise).

Emilia Clarke currently stars in 'Ponies' on Peacock.
