Drawing a Line in the Sand
As AI-generated tracks flood Spotify and Apple Music, Bandcamp has decided to take a stand. The platform, beloved by independent artists for its fair revenue splits, updated its Terms of Service this week to explicitly ban content created entirely by AI.
"Created by Humans"
"We want musicians to keep making music, and for fans to have confidence that the music they find on Bandcamp was created by humans," the company stated in a Reddit post that has since gone viral.
This doesn't mean you can't use digital tools. Synthesizers, drum machines, and DAWs are all fine. But typing a prompt into Suno or Udio and uploading the result? That is now grounds for account termination.
Why It Matters
Bandcamp is positioning itself as the "organic" grocery store of the music world. While other platforms are choked with low-effort AI lo-fi beats, Bandcamp is betting that listeners will pay a premium for authenticity.
The Challenge of Enforcement
The big question remains: how will they enforce it? AI detection tools are notoriously unreliable. Bandcamp will likely rely on community reporting and manual review, a strategy that is noble but resource-intensive.
For now, though, the message is clear: support human art.
