Abbott Elementary Season 5: The Return of the Villains Shakes Up Willard R. Abbott

Double Trouble at Abbott
Abbott Elementary is at its best when it balances warmth with the harsh realities of the public school system. In Season 5, Episode 10, the show leans into the chaos by bringing back not one, but two of its most effective antagonists: Tariq (Zach Fox) and Krystal (Raven Goodwin).
Usually, the "villains" in Abbott are systemic: budget cuts, the school board, or a broken HVAC unit. But Tariq and Krystal represent a different kind of hurdle—the personal and the petty.
Tariq: The Ex-Boyfriend Who Won't Go Away
Tariq, Janine's ex, is the king of failing upwards. His return usually signals a distraction for Janine (Quinta Brunson), who has finally been finding her footing as a leader. In this episode, Tariq's involvement in a school "fundraiser" (which is mostly a showcase for his own questionable rap career) satirizes how outside "partners" can exploit schools for their own visibility.
Krystal: The Parent Problem
Krystal, on the other hand, represents the combative parent. Her beef with Gregory (Tyler James Williams) highlights the delicate tightrope teachers walk. One wrong word, one misunderstood grade, and a parent can make a teacher's life miserable.
Bringing them back in the same episode serves as a pressure cooker for the staff. It forces the teachers to band together, reminding the audience that their bond is the only thing keeping the school running.
Why We Love to Hate Them
The genius of Abbott Elementary is that even the villains are funny. Tariq's absurdity and Krystal's over-the-top defensiveness are hilarious, even as they induce anxiety. They keep the show from becoming too saccharine. Abbott isn't a utopia; it's a workplace, and sometimes, the people you work with (or for) are the problem.
As Season 5 heads towards its finale, this double-dose of antagonism is likely setting the stage for a major victory—or a major crisis—for Janine and the crew.
