In a major move on his final day in office, President Joe Biden pardoned five individuals and commuted the sentences of two. One of those granted amnesty was the late political activist and black nationalist Marcus Garvey, a major figure in the civil rights movement. “America is a country founded on the promise of second chances,” Biden said in a statement. “As President, I have used my clemency authority to make this promise a reality, issuing more individual pardons and commutations than any other president in American history. Today, I exercised my clemency authority to pardon five individuals and grant pardons to two Sentences reduced for those who show remorse, vindication and redemption.” A prominent civil rights leader, Garvey was convicted of mail fraud in 1923 and sentenced to five years in prison.
