President Biden withdraws from TikTok ban, leaving decision to Trump administration

Despite a vigorous crusade against TikTok, President Joe Biden will not enforce a ban planned in the coming days. Instead, as a U.S. official confirmed Thursday, the decision will be made by President-elect Donald Trump. The shift delays a congressional mandate signed by Biden requiring TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance to divest the app by January 19. Trump, who has advocated for a ban on the video-sharing app, has pledged to continue using it. “Number one, TikTok is a great platform that a lot of Americans use,” said incoming national security adviser Mike Waltz, adding, “But number two, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is expected to work with Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer urged Biden to extend the divestment deadline, emphasizing the livelihoods of influencers who rely on TikTok. “More time is needed to find an American buyer than to disrupt millions of Americans,” Senator Tom Cotton said. Cotton objected, calling TikTok a “Chinese Communist Party spy app.” The Supreme Court recently heard arguments about the legality of the authorization, and observers expected the ruling to uphold the law. Walz hinted at Trump's negotiating strategy. Claiming that “he is a deal maker… we will create this space to get the deal done. Trump's campaign has embraced TikTok to appeal to younger voters, a departure from his previous stance. As his team says, the app has played a key role in securing youth support.
