Those who enjoy sitting down at Starbucks or getting their work done remotely will now be required to purchase something in order to continue doing so. The beloved coffee chain is changing its open-door policy, forcing those who want to linger or use the restroom to purchase something. The new code of conduct will also prohibit harassment, discrimination, smoking, vaping, drug use and panhandling in the company's North American stores. The shift marks a departure from a policy implemented in Philadelphia in 2018 after a black man was arrested at a sit-down location without ordering. The incident was caught on video, sparking outrage and forcing the company to adjust its practices. Now, under CEO Brian Niccol, Starbucks aims to refocus on “places that keep people coming back” while balancing customer comfort and safety. Spokesperson Jaci Anderson emphasized prioritizing paying customers while stressing, “We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable in our stores,” explained. Employees will receive training on enforcing the policy, which allows stores to contact law enforcement if necessary. Despite its inclusive vision, Starbucks faces challenges with disruptive behavior, including drug use and safety threats. In 2022, the company closed 16 stores, citing safety concerns. “We don't want to be a public bathroom,” Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz said during the policy shift in 2018, while also emphasizing the dignity of all customers. Thankfully, there doesn’t appear to be any minimum purchase requirement for customers. Even buying a bar of granola or a bag of nuts is enough and gives you access to the cafe's tables, toilets and charging space.
