Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant is getting a six-figure paycheck after a deal with a restaurant fell through. Ja Morant, a staple in the Memphis chicken wing scene, owes Morant more than $365,000 after an arbitrator ruled in his favor and barred him from doing so. The restaurant is prohibited from using his name, image or likeness in advertising. The fallout began when The Wing Guru stopped paying Morant four months later in January 2022. Still, the restaurant continues to use Morant's likeness in promotions. According to the arbitration filing, Morant's attorneys sent a letter in November 2022 demanding more than $43,000 in unpaid dues. The restaurant responded by promising to pay the $75,000 in full by January 1, 2023, but no payment was made. While the deal was relatively modest, Morant's attorneys argued that the unauthorized use of his name and image caused significant financial harm, especially as Morant's brand continues to grow, including a signature with Nike Shoe Agreement. The Wing Guru also advertises in cities such as Nashville, Houston and Dallas, where it has recently expanded. On July 23, 2024, arbitrator Bernice Donald ruled that The Wing Guru must pay Morant $365,525.30, including damages for the unauthorized use of his likeness. The wing maestro did not contest the ruling within the allotted time, leaving Morant's victory intact. In 2022, Morant signed a five-year contract extension with the Grizzlies worth $197.2 million. Although the payment from the “Winger Master” is just a drop in the bucket for the star player, it is money owed after all, and Morant is determined to get the money back.
