An outbreak of a highly contagious virus in China has health officials on alert. Reports show that cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory disease that mainly affects children under 14 years old, are surging in northern China. Despite public concerns, Chinese authorities have downplayed the situation, dismissing it as a regular seasonal peak. “Respiratory infections tend to peak in winter,” the ministry said. HMPV was first discovered in 2001 and belongs to the same virus family as RSV. While symptoms are similar to the common cold—fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath—severe cases can lead to pneumonia or bronchitis. The virus is spread through coughing, sneezing or touching contaminated surfaces. Social media videos show Chinese hospitals being overwhelmed, fueling fears of a potential pandemic. Dr. Mark Siegel of NYU Langone Health warned: “There is no reason to think it has taken hold and is becoming the next pandemic, but because China may be withholding information, it will be difficult to get the full picture.” The CDC assures the American public that “these reports are not of concern in the United States at this time.” Frequent hand washing, avoiding contact with sick people, and disinfecting surfaces remain recommended precautions. Centivax's Jacob Glanville noted that HMPV “poses unique risks to children but is not considered to have broader pandemic potential.” Although there is no approved vaccine, treatment includes rest, hydration and symptom management.
