Relatives and admirers of former President Jimmy Carter will begin bidding farewell as his homecoming ceremony begins Saturday. The state funeral begins at 10:15 a.m. Saturday with Carter's family gathering at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia. Later, the late president's coffin will be carried into a hearse by Secret Service personnel. The motorcade will pass through Plains, Georgia, where Carter spent much of his life, including a stop at his family farm, before heading to the Georgia Capitol for a moment of silence. When he was elected in 1976, Carter was little known nationally. Served in the Georgia Senate and as governor. After that defeat in 1980, he returned to Georgia, where he founded the Carter Center, which focused on public health and global democracy issues. After serving in the White House, Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, devoted themselves to a wide range of philanthropic endeavors, including volunteering with Habitat for Humanity for many years. Funeral services will be held at the center on Saturday at 4 p.m. EST, followed by a public visitation. Carter is at rest from 7 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Tuesday. On Tuesday morning, his body will be transported to Washington, D.C., where he will be laid to rest at the U.S. Capitol from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Thursday. Carter's final journey ended with a state funeral at Washington National Cathedral before returning to Georgia for the funeral. Private funeral with interment at home.
