The Detroit Pistons were dealt a major blow when Jaden Iway, the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, suffered a serious injury during a home game against the Orlando Magic. The incident occurred early in the fourth quarter after Cade Cunningham missed a three-pointer. As Ivey and Magic guard Cole Anthony battled for the ball, Anthony dove for the ball and rolled awkwardly under Ivey's legs. Ivey's screams marked the horrific scene, indicating the severity of the injuries. His legs were stabilized on the field before being placed on a stretcher. Players from both teams gathered at halfcourt for prayers and support, with Anthony visibly shaken by the unexpected play. Reports from ESPN and the Detroit Free Press confirmed that Ivey suffered a fractured fibula. In his third year, Ivey made great strides and became a front-runner for the NBA's Most Improved Player award. He started all 30 games this season, averaging 17.6 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds per game, setting a career high, and his three-point shooting rate was as high as 40.9%. The Pistons also showed improvement after a disappointing last season. Head coach JB Bickerstaff emphasized the team's resilience after the game. “The core of this team and what we’ve been trying to preach all year since we got here is unity,” Bickerstaff said. “If one guy goes down, you don't want to let him down, so everyone else has to step up. That's the human side of it. But I thought our guys did a really good job of coming together and getting the job done.” Ivey's injury took an emotional toll on the Pistons, who still defeated the Magic 105-96. However, they still face challenges, including Cade Cunningham's ongoing knee issues. Currently sitting at 15-17, the team must now regroup as they aim to get back to .500 this season.
