New Orleans officials have identified 42-year-old Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar as a suspect in the New Year's Eve terrorist attack on Bourbon Street that killed 15 people and injured dozens more. The fatal incident occurred early Wednesday when a rental pickup truck driven by Jabbar crashed through a barricade and into a three-block crowd of New Year's revelers. Witnesses said the suspect fired into the crowd, then got out of his vehicle with an assault rifle and engaged in a shootout with police. Jabbar was shot and killed by law enforcement officers during the confrontation. The attack killed 15 people and injured 25 others, many of them seriously. Police confirmed that two police officers were also injured, one of whom was injured and another who was run over by the suspect's truck. Surveillance video suggests Kareem Abdul-Jabbar may not have acted alone. FBI officials revealed that video showed several people placing potential explosive devices on Bourbon Street before the attack. Authorities detonated the devices as a precaution. FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Althea Duncan emphasized the importance of the public assisting in the investigation. “We are pursuing all leads and believe Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has co-conspirators. If anyone has interacted with Shamsuddin Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the past 72 hours, please contact us immediately,” Duncan said at a news conference. His motive is unclear, but investigators are working to establish links with any known associates or groups who may be involved. Louisiana Democrat Troy Carter said the death toll had risen to 15 as of Wednesday afternoon. He noted the New Orleans community's resilience in the face of the unprecedented tragedy, which disrupted the usual celebratory moments in the French Quarter.
