Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward decided to play only the first half of last Saturday's Pop Tart Bowl against Iowa State. VideoWard broke the NCAA Division I quarterback record for most passing touchdowns (156). After the first half, the future first-round pick completed 12 of 19 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. After this impressive start, Ward opted not to play, which in most circles wasn't a big deal. But analyst Emmanuel Acho saw Monday's slow sports news cycle and decided to go ahead with his opinion, which is completely wrong. “Half-time was crazy after breaking the record,” Acho claimed. “You stand on the shoulders of your team, you use your teammates to break records, but when your teammates need to use you to win games, you're nowhere to be found,” Acho roared. Let’s stop quoting. Here's the thing about former college players: Things have changed, and if it doesn't reflect the same practices and ethics, then they're saying the players and/or coaches are to blame. This is an irresponsible approach, especially when players can now be transferred on a year-to-year basis. Acho brought up Ward's legacy and ideology that Ward needs to stay true to a program he's only been a part of for one year. So your program requires you to make history. You made history with your program, but when they needed you to help them make history, you weren't there. This is a college football problem. It's 'me, me, me. I don't play football, I want to transfer,” Acho added. To be clear, Ward was never asked to play. He went from not receiving any scholarship offers as a high school senior to becoming an NFL player One of the top quarterback prospects in the draft, this experience highlights his toughness and leadership. Miami fans defended Ward following Acho's comments this morning, emphasizing his leadership as part of their success in reaching the top ten. A few hours later, Acho made a statement in the locker room. An updated video retracting his statement, which you can watch below, shows him seemingly trying to save face, regardless of his capacity. Mario Cristobal wants to remain silent, which would be a disservice to Cam Ward. and fan base. But I just got Cam from someone in the know The other side of Ward's situation: https://t.co/vRSfqeBnlJ pic.twitter.com/r3DqbV0R2v — Emmanuel Acho (@EmmanuelAcho) December 30, 2024 Like this: Like Loading..
