Tesla faces a proposed class action lawsuit accusing the company of exaggerating odometer readings on its vehicles, potentially cutting short warranty coverage and allowing drivers to provide significant repair costs. The lawsuit was filed by Los Angeles resident Nyree Hinton, accusing Tesla's Odometers of using algorithms based on energy use and driving behavior rather than actual Miles-driven behavior, rather than actual Miles drives. According to Hinton, the mileage tracking speed he purchased for the 2020 Model Y is 15% faster than reality. This caused his warranty to expire earlier than expected, forcing him to pay $10,000 in repairs from the bag. The lawsuit claims Tesla's benefits triggered early warranty periods by using exaggerated mileage, pushing drivers to purchase extended coverage and increase repair revenue. Hinton seeks damages on behalf of Tesla owners in California, which could cover more than one million vehicles. Tesla recently moved the case to federal court in Los Angeles. The company has not commented publicly on the case, but has previously denied similar allegations. This is not the first time Tesla has encountered legal troubles with vehicle data. The company also deals with claims of exaggerating battery range estimates, and the case has redirected it to individual arbitration earlier this year.
