The Trump administration is ending a plan that protects thousands of Afghans living in the United States from deportation. Starting from May 20, more than 9,000 Afghan nationals may lose legal protection and removal unless Congress or courts intervene. This change affects those covered by Temporary Protection Status (TPS), a policy that allows people from countries suffering from war or disaster to temporarily live and work in the United States. After the Taliban took over the country, the TPS was first awarded to Afghans in 2022 and was extended again in 2023 due to instability. This means that once protection expires by May 20, many Afghan families who flee from danger may need to return even if Taliban rules comply with the Taliban rules. Unless a new protection or legal challenge is issued to delay the proceedings, deportation lawsuits may begin within a few weeks of the expiration date.
