A federal judge denied a libel lawsuit that Trump demanded to abandon five sentences, which has sparked decades of controversy between Trump and the man who had a wrongful conviction, closer to a court showdown. The case depends on Trump's continued claims, even though the men were admitted to the 1989 jogger attack in Central Park in 2002 by another man. When the incident occurred, Trump famously took out a full-page newspaper advertisement calling for a return to the death penalty, a move that was widely regarded as targeting the teenagers of the time. During last year’s debate, Harris mentioned the ads, prompting Trump to say: “They admit: They acknowledge: They acknowledge—they say, they say, I say, I say, if they commit a crime. Judge Beetlestone ruled that Trump knew the people had been exempted and still chose to spread misinformation. The court rejected Trump’s claim to reject the libel claim, but it did abandon two parts of the lawsuit, including claims that intentionally caused emotional distress and another defamation theory. The judge said the plaintiffs showed no evidence of physical harm or sufficiently determined malicious intentions for these claims.
