Systane eye drops recalled due to fungal contamination concerns

Alcon Laboratories, maker of the popular Systane eye drops, recalled a batch of Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF on Dec. 23 due to possible fungal contamination. The recall comes after consumer complaints led to the discovery of foreign objects in sealed single-use vials. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Alcon confirmed that the substance was fungal in nature. While no adverse events have been reported to date, Alcon initiated the voluntary recall “out of an abundance of caution.” The recalled product, Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF (single-bottle carry-on), is sold in packs of 25 tablets, lot number 10101, and has an expiration date of September 2025. Consumers who have purchased the affected product are advised to stop using it immediately and return it to the point of purchase for a refund or replacement. Alcon is working with dealers to remove any remaining inventory of the recalled products from shelves. Stores affected by the recall include Kroger stores in multiple states, as well as Fred Meyer, Ralphs, QFC and Publix. The FDA warns that fungal contamination in eye drops could lead to eye infections that could threaten vision or, in rare cases, Alcon emphasized its commitment to safety, spokesman Steven Smith noted. The contamination appears to be isolated to one unit, but it added that the recall prioritizes the welfare of consumers. “Our top priority is ensuring the safety of our products while complying with the requirements of all regulatory agencies,” Smith said.
