Costco recalls eggs after FDA warns of salmonella risk

Costco customers in the southeastern United States are being urged to check their eggs after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a serious warning about potential salmonella contamination. The recall, involving Handsome Brook Farms free-range eggs sold under Costco's Kirkland Signature brand, has been classified as a Class 1 recall – the FDA's highest risk level. According to the FDA, this classification indicates there is a “reasonable likelihood” that consuming eggs from the affected products could cause serious health problems or death. While no illnesses have been reported so far, the recall highlights the potential dangers of contaminated products. The recall specifically applies to cartons with Julian code 327 and a “use by” date of January 5, 2025. The eggs were distributed to 25 Costco locations in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee that began the recall on November 22, 2024. Handsome Brook Farms discovered last month that eggs not intended for retail sale contained eggs that had been improperly packaged and distributed to Costco stores. In response, the company said it has implemented additional supply chain controls and retraining to prevent such errors in the future. Salmonella is a foodborne illness that can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea and more serious complications, especially in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Consumers who purchased affected eggs are advised to discard them or return them to Costco for a refund. The FDA emphasizes that no other Handsome Brook Farms or Costco products are affected by this recall.
