Texas Representative Sylvester Turner, a former Houston mayor, died suddenly just two months after joining Congress. Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced at a city council meeting on Wednesday, March 5 that Turner was at a meeting in Whitmire. He was later pronounced dead. “It shocked everyone,” Whitmere said, adding that flags across Houston will be lowered to half of those. “I would ask Houstonians to come together to pray for his family and to celebrate this extraordinary civil servant with us.” Turner served as mayor of Houston from 2016 to 2024, known for leading the city through major crises, including the 19-year-old epidemic of Hurricanes Harvey and Covid. In November 2024, he was elected to represent the 18th Congressional District of Texas, and the vacant seat took over the seat after the death of longtime Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who died of pancreatic cancer. The cause of death has not been determined. He was previously diagnosed with bone cancer in 2022 and underwent surgery and radiation therapy. Turner, a lifelong resident of Houston, attended school at the University of Houston and then obtained his law degree from Harvard Law School. His daughter Ashley Page Turner and his grandson survived.
