Citigroup recently made a jaw-dropping mistake that caused many people to scratch their heads, a $81 trillion mistake that should have been only $280 at the time. The newly published error occurred last April when payment staff and inspection monitoring officers missed the error before processing the transaction the next day. It wasn't until nearly two hours later that others encountered this error, and by then the incorrect payment had appeared in the customer's account – only a few hours after this could be reversed. The company called the incident “almost MISS” a “nearly miss” to the auditor-general of currency, meaning that the error did not lose any funds as these funds could be recovered. But, what is really confusing is that this is not even the first time Citigroup has encountered such misfortune. In fact, according to CNBC, there were nearly 10 things that were seen in 2024 alone, with nearly $1 billion or more. In a statement, they highlighted efforts to eliminate manual processes and move towards more automated controls.
