Spirit Airlines starts enforcing strict dress code; offensive tattoos and crop tops not allowed on board

Passengers flying on Spirit Airlines must now make sure they are properly covered. The airline quietly updated its contract of carriage to state that passengers “will not be permitted to board the aircraft” if they are “barefoot or inappropriately clothed.” Unacceptable attire includes see-through clothing, exposed private parts, or clothing considered lewd, obscene or offensive. Certain tattoos will also be banned on Spirit Airlines. Recent events have highlighted the need for stricter enforcement. In January, Texas passenger John Garcia Jr. was ejected for wearing a “FVCK HATE WORLD TOUR” hoodie. After refusing to take it off, Garcia was escorted off the plane but had no problem wearing the same hoodie on the rescheduled trip. “It was a complete surprise to me,” he told the San Antonio Express-News. Likewise, in October 2024 passengers Tara Kehidi and Teresa Araujo were kicked off a flight for wearing midriff-baring tops. The friends initially wore sweaters and pants, but because of the heat, they took off their clothes. They claim the situation escalated when a flight attendant asked them to cover up or be removed, causing them to leave the plane without a refund. “It's such a disgrace… we've wasted time, money and dignity,” Tara told MailOnline.com. Spirit Airlines justified these actions based on its 60-page contract of carriage, which passengers agreed to when booking. The airline insists these standards ensure a comfortable environment for all passengers. As a precaution, passengers should bring a sweater in case they are asked to cover or hide inappropriate body art.
