Trump has ordered all DEI staff at federal agencies to be furloughed. The directive is part of a sweeping executive order aimed at eliminating DEI-related initiatives and policies that the administration claims promote “discrimination” under the guise of fairness. The executive order gives federal agencies 60 days to eliminate all offices, roles and initiatives dedicated to DEI. Additionally, it would require staff currently holding DEI positions to be furloughed indefinitely, effectively sidelining those who have been working to implement and oversee federal workforce diversity programs. Trump's executive order accuses former President Joe Biden of “embedding DEI programs in nearly every aspect of the federal government” and outlines steps to dismantle those efforts. Key directives include: Eliminate DEI offices and staff: All across federal agencies Diversity, Equity and Inclusion offices and positions must close within 60 days, and DEI employees will be furloughed as programs are phased out Federal Spending Review: A government-wide review of grants, contracts and programs to determine whether they are consistent with the government. The new anti-DEI Position. Programs that prioritize marginalized communities may face cuts or termination of DEI. Training and Policies: Anti-bias training, diversity-related hiring practices and other initiatives to promote inclusion will be eliminated Litigation Settlement: Federal agencies are encouraged to resolve ongoing lawsuits against historically underserved populations. Questions have been raised about plans to provide benefits to communities. Under Biden, agencies are required to develop annual diversity plans, provide progress reports and track hiring and promotions. The administration also created the Council of Chief Diversity Officers to oversee the efforts. Trump's executive order ended those programs and halted related programs, effectively reversing years of progress. First-term policies that included banning anti-bias training that addressed concepts like systemic racism and privilege, although Biden reversed that ban on his first day in office, Trump returned to anti-DEI. The policy comes amid growing conservative opposition to diversity initiatives in the corporate world. High-profile companies such as Walmart and Facebook have scaled back or terminated DEI programs in response to legal challenges and changing political winds. Trump's new order capitalizes on that momentum.
