A tragic shooting at Antioch High School in Nashville on Wednesday left one female student dead, another wounded, and a 17-year-old gunman taking his own life. Metro Nashville Police spokesman Don Aaron said the incident occurred in the school cafeteria. . Authorities said the gunman, also a student at the school, used a handgun in the attack. Another student suffered a scratch and another was treated for an eye injury following the shooting. The 2,000-student school, about 10 miles southeast of downtown Nashville, was placed on lockdown immediately after the shooting. Two school resource officers were in the building but not near the cafeteria when the violence occurred. When they arrived, the gunman had turned the gun on himself. Parents were asked not to rush to the school but to go to a nearby hospital, which was being used as a reunion center. Waves of students were driven to assembly points, where police helped reunite them with their families. At the reunion site, visibly shocked parents, including DaJuan Bernard, waited anxiously to hug their children. Bernard's 10th-grade son was in the auditorium when the shooting occurred and called his father to let him know he was safe. “He was a little surprised, but he said everything was fine,” Bernard said. Despite the relief, Bernard expressed his concern about the growing number of school shootings. “The world is crazy and it can happen anywhere. We have to protect children and raise them right to prevent things like this from happening.” The shooting comes as Nashville is still trying to cope with the trauma of another tragic incident in early 2023 , when a gunman killed three 9-year-old children. Senior children and three staff members from Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in the city. Police have not yet revealed a motive for Wednesday's shooting and have not asked the FBI to assist in the investigation.
